Peter Mahoney

EVP and Chief Program Executive, Building Our Future Program

Peter Mahoney is chief program executive for Truist Financial Corporation, a purpose-driven financial services organization committed to inspiring and building better lives and communities. He is also a member of Truist’s Operating Council.

As chief program executive, Mahoney was selected by Truist’s chairman and CEO to lead the “Building Our Future” Program, a bank-wide program to enhance risk, governance and strategic capabilities to meet emerging market and regulatory expectations. 

Prior to taking this role in May 2023, Mahoney served as senior deputy general counsel, advising management and the Truist Board of Directors on public affairs, regulatory policy and prudential and consumer protection supervisory matters. Previously, he served in numerous roles with a predecessor company, including as chief regulatory & compliance officer, responsible for enterprise-wide compliance and BSA/AML programs across all segments and functions and managing relationships with federal and state supervisory and enforcement agencies.  

He also is active in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion, currently serving since 2020 as special advisor to the Economic Justice Committee of the American Bar Association Civil Rights & Social Justice Section and previously as executive sponsor of Truist’s Legal DEI Council and Legal Pro Bono program.

Mahoney graduated from the University of Virginia (bachelor’s degree with high distinction) and the University of Virginia School of Law. He is a member of the New York and Virginia bars and a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, and he serves on numerous nonprofit boards, including as chair of the Audit and Finance Committee of the UVA Foundation.
