Joe Thompson
Chief Governance and Controls Officer
Joseph M. “Joe” Thompson is the chief governance and controls officer for Truist Financial Corporation, a purpose-driven financial services organization committed to inspiring and building better lives and communities. He is accountable for governing the organization and management of first-line risk execution to ensure reliable outcomes that meet safe, sound, and ever-evolving risk management expectations. He is also a member of Truist’s Operating Council.
Previously Thompson served as head of Truist Wealth. He provided oversight for delivery of holistic wealth management solutions to affluent, high, and ultra-high net worth individuals, families, and businesses in the U.S. and abroad. He also directed the provision of corporate trust, escrow, and institutional investment management services for public, private, and non-profit organizations.
Thompson joined Truist predecessor subsidiary SunTrust Robinson Humphrey in 1991 where he served as head of both Investment Banking and Corporate Banking. He was also head of Private Wealth Management at SunTrust Banks, Inc. His previous experience also includes mergers and acquisitions with Morgan Stanley & Co. Inc.
Thompson is a member of the board of Truist Investment Services, Truist Securities Inc., and Truist Advisory Services. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Williams College and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
